Originally, the area now known as Short Hills was part of Springfield, New Jersey. Short Hills began as a planned community, when Stewart Hartshorn purchased 13 acres of land in Millburn Township, near the present Hobart Avenue, Parsonage Hill Road, and Chatham Road. Hartshorn's purpose was to create "a harmonious community for people who appreciated nature," and "where natural beauty would not be destroyed by real estate developments, also, where people of congenial tastes could dwell together."

Median household income is $235,216, well above the national average and median house values equally rank among the upper echelon of $1,000,000 with lots sizes ranging .4 – 1 acre. Predominate architecture types vary among historical tudors to modern contemporaries and eclectic new construction. Short Hill’s operates under the Township of Millburn government, however it does have its own railroad station and post-office branch. Downtown Short Hills, separate from downtown Millburn has a quaint business area a bit smaller than downtown Millburn located along Chatham Road, parallel to the train station. Locals enjoy the convenience of a local eateries, several boutiques/specialty shops and a recently renovated four-screen theater in the heart of downtown.

The Millburn Police Department consist of 54 sworn police officers and over 40 non-sworn personnel who provide 24 hour protection and service to the municipality. The Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad (MSHVFAS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency medical services (EMS) to Millburn Township and Short Hills residents. The MSHVFAS is staffed by all volunteers and funded through private contributions.

Short Hills does not disappoint when it comes to recreation, nature, community and entertainment. Founded in 1934, The Paper Mill Playhouse is a professional Equity theatre seating 1,200 and attracts close to 425,000 theatre-goers each season. Paper Mill offers a full range of cultural events including musicals, plays, and children’s programs along with New Jersey Ballet’s Nutcracker during the holiday season. Paper Mill one of the few theatres in the country to be fully accessible to people with disabilities. Short Hills offers exceptional recreational facilities, well maintained parks and playing fields. Millburn Community Passoffers access to several of these attractions and can be purchased by local residents. Taylor Park, a 16-acre field is known for its lush rose garden, clear walking path, picnic area, courts/athletic fields, bustling pond and Bauer Community Center. Taylor Park is well known for its Summer Concert series where residents take part in free, live music for the whole family. Additional popular recreational destinations include; The Millburn Township Community Pool, located in Gero Park which features a water slide, a wading pool for small children, swim lesson/swim team and a golf course and tennis court – in addition to The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum & Bird Sanctuary. The Millburn Recreation Department offers an extensive list of programs geared toward youth, adults and senior citizens. Youth activities are seasonal, including soccer, football, hockey, basketball, wrestling, softball, skiing, cross country and track, field hockey, summer playground camps and swimming.

Finally and arguably the largest crowd pleaser is the region’s preeminent shopping destination, The Mall at Short Hills. Home to big names such as Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Apple, Cartier, Gucci, Peloton, Tesla and Burberry where shoppers travel well outside of the Metro area to stroll the decadent shops. With easy access to several major highways and lodging in close proximity Short Hills maintains a solid reputation and continues to offers strong real estate investments.
